Chess, Mon Amor | Amor Services

Marcel Duchamp once said, “I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art — and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position.” Though one can disagree as to see how widely successful The Queen’s Gambit brought to an example of the ultimate in commercial successes, a surge of 273% on searching platforms within 10 days of the shows release can totally attest to the fact that chess has had a comeback as the it girl of gaming… Take that backgammon. Now that we are all up for a game that meets up with the stylized demands of our inside lives and the proposition to preserve our brains from the streaming wasteland, Amor Services have come to deliver, with their latest project CHESS, MON AMOR.

Abandoning the black and white traditions the board, this remix is envisioned in red and blue as a direct reference to current sociopolitical unrest and also raises the emotional stakes. Chess pieces by Alake Shilling (king), Tremaine Emory (queen), Bernhard Willhelm (bishop), Yves Tumor (knight) , Gaetano Pesce (rook) , Ser Serpas (pawn), Mandy Harris Williams (didactics) round out an ecclectic and brilliant crew of creatives. King

Alake Shilling (b. 1993, Los Angeles, CA) is the creator of all things deep and magical – she is a painter and sculptor of creatures, in a gelatinous rainbow style in debt to Lisa Frank as much as Peter Saul, bearing carefully coded emotions and driving rich narratives about companionship, risk and reward. Shilling has exhibited at countless galleries and fairs worldwide and has an upcoming traveling exhibition with Jeffrey Deitch. For Chess, Mon Amor, Shilling has scaled one of her sought-after, infamous ladybug ceramics to the pocket-size of the King.

Queen

Tremaine Emory a.k.a Denim Tears (b. 1979, Atlanta, GA) has been releasing products featuring the iconography of Mother Mary since 2014. Regarding his designs he has said “I’m recontextualizing the black image across as many mediums as possible to get this story told…” Emory – a.k.a Denim Tears – is a creative luminary & legend in fashion, music, and culture producing radio shows, podcasts, and envisioning crossovers between contemporary art and creative outlets, Emory works as a leader of the cultural provocateur. Here, Emory has adapted his Mother Mary design as the Queen of the chess set.

Bishop

Trailblazer to all things tableau vivant and avant garde in modern day fashion, Bernhard Willhelm (b. 1972, Ulm, DE) is the entrusted Simon Cowell of fashion, the litmus test of significance, a light on the road ahead, the godfather of anything worthwhile in fashion today, in Chess, Mon Amor, he is our anointed bishop. Willhelm designed the Bishop based off of his classic pumpkin-head model made in collaboration with artist Geoffrey Lillemon, that has been used on some of his most sought-after garments.

Knight

While all futures are unknown, we do know that 21st century experimental music would look a lot differently without musician and artist Yves Tumor (b. 1989, Knoxville, TN) Genre-bending Tumor is among the most interesting artists working today; with each new record, embodying a genre—its history, its texture, its tropes. Signed by Warped Records and written about countless times in publications like the NY Times, Pitchfork, the Guardian, Paper Mag and countless more. For Chess, Mon Amor, Tumor becomes embodied as the Knight itself, marking his first move into the fine art world.

Rook

Guided by a constant drive towards innovation and experimentation, Gaetano Pesce (b. 1939, La Spezia, IT), architect, artist and designer, has created public and private projects in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia, in the fields of architecture, town planning, interior design, and industrial and exhibition design. In Pesce’s production, the borders between art, design and industry become irrelevant because art is also a product, it is the creative reply to the needs of the times we are living in.

Needless to say, Pesce one of the most iconic designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Pioneer of all things important in design, Pesce has created a classic interpretation of the Rook, imbued with the radical energy of an innovative career spanning over five decades.

Pawns

The pawn is represented by artist Ser Serpas (b. 1995, Los Angeles, CA). Primarily interested in death and legacy, her work is preoccupied with its own urgency in the face of fossilization. Precarious assemblages of disparate objects found in the street constitute her most well known series to date. Serpas has translated that practice into the form of the Pawn, which are archived parts of a discarded dollhouse left on the curb outside of AMOR’s office.

Serpas has had solo shows at the LUMA Foundation in Zurich and Ludlow 38 in New York. She took part in the 2020 Made in LA biennial at the Hammer Museum and the Huntington. She was featured in shows at the Pinault Collection, Punta Della Dogana, Venice and the Swiss Institute, New York.

Board

The sides and compartments of the board are engraved with a commissioned text by artist and cultural theorist Mandy Harris Williams – aka idealblackfemale (b. 1988, New York, NY). Williams, having coined the popular term #brownupyourfeed and recently named as one of Cultured Magazines “Young Artists 2021,” stands as one of the most important voices in our contemporary moment. For Chess, Mon Amor, Williams created the poetic didactics for the board itself, exploring timeless concepts such a love, power and beauty.

The time now to buckle down on our own terms is ever vital as we do shelter in and define our own version of “sweater weather”. As of late a merging of the tactile and nude has defined this new vision of comfort and lounge, nothing hits like the combo of heat tech synthetics and the tried and tested fluidity of a good knit. But must we not forget that our full looks of SSENSE sale items are getting to peak fatigue as a stroll or hike around the neighborhood is the new cruising ground for who is cute and the dictation of what’s hot.

Fortunately, LA based interior design company bläanks has broken through from the hospitality range to get the goods direct to consumers. With their highly textural knits and bold to subdued colors, the brand gives a slight nod to its Scandinavian roots as well as the embrace of Los Angeles’ rock n roll traditions. We spoke to Judy Pokonosky and Suss Cousins to discuss sustainability, the emotions of knits, and defining the current culture of comfort.

What is the story on how you met each other, your style and vision are a great shift from the usual knitting traditions?

We met in the apparel industry about 25 years ago and re-connected roughly 4 years ago and started bläanks.

We were inspired and saw a great opportunity in the Hospitality and A+D Space for amazing textured knits that we applied to throws and pillows. We feel our unique background and experience brought something different to this market.

I notice that you shot at the Arroyo Seco, what was the significance to shooting there and in general this type of urban adjacent nature?

Being a California and specifically a Los Angeles based company we are very inspired by the amazing nature and outdoor spaces that are in literally in our backyards!

We love the history of California-the energy and possibilities of expanded space that the west coast provides-Southern California loves it’s outdoor living spaces.

With the worlds condition, how do you see the work you have done in homewares and interior life being part of a greater discussion on the way things are shifting?

We pride ourselves as a company with sustainable product and practices. 

With a custom made to order in the USA machine washable yarn strategy we keep our carbon footprint light and provide unique product for each client and project with competitive pricing. Our research shows that no one was checking all these boxes in this market.

How did this new venture into DTC and the patchwork pattern come together?

We were really excited to offer something unique that we ourselves wanted to design-definitely knitted throws and pillows that were limited editions.

 

What trends do you see coming up in knitwear and how have you participated or feel like you are pushing the culture forward? 

We have had a great response to the unique textures and color combos that we have designed. Knits are very emotional, and our clients really love the feel and energy of knitted goods vs. the usual woven product in the market. We research and are inspired by history of stitches from all over the world -bringing new twists to them into the 21st century with a definite eye on marketplace trend.

How do you see the brand differentiating from other knit oriented interior companies?

We want to highlight we are a custom resource; this is very important as people really respond to ordering and having unique product made for them. Suss has written 7 books about technical knitting, giving bläanks an incredible advantage in developing amazing knitted pillows and throws.

Bitcoin, Blockchain, Cockblock All the Same Right?

We take on the majestic world of bitcoin through a demonstration by art world darling Angelina Dreem, and while you’re at it check out some of the items you might need to pretend that Robinhood is the Matrix.

“As a child of the recession, the banks got the bail out and we didn’t, I got out of college with nothing. I want to help people understand money more as I am understanding it and learning it. I think the only way we will be getting back the power from these stupid billionaires is by understanding their tactics. I just want to help everybody understand this silly world of money.”

A self-described artist freak who loves information and revolutionary systems, bitcoin being all the above. Her interest began in 2011 when bitcoin first came onto the scene. She started seriously investing in 2016 buying and selling most around 2018 during the peak. Now we are at the point where the institutions and technology has caught up with what is possible: the potential to fuck big banks. Below she provides  Tips to confidently open Robinhood and break the simulatrix *shout out @signepierce. 

The Brief History

In 2008/2009 this open-source software came on the web and promised to decentralize Digital currency based on a peer-to-peer network, meaning no middle man. Blocks are stacked with two parties witnessing the transaction then it is time stamped and locked into the cryptographic box. That block adds to the block of all the histories staying connected and ensuring tight security, that is why it is cryptographic making it so no one can edit an old block eliminating the need for oversight organizations like banks. The information locked in can be anything. Also, why it is called crypto for short. From this technology other coins have emerged such as Ether or Lightcoin.   

The coins are the product of “mining” which is essentially when computers are crunching the algorithm and when they solve it the outcome is a coin. That is why it is held under the revolutionary umbrella of Fintech (Financial technology is the technology and innovation that aims to compete with traditional financial methods in the delivery of financial services.) The fintech revolution started with PayPal revolutionizing the fact that you don’t need a bank, Venmo as well. Basically, not relying on centralized system, kind of anarchist. The people that know and the financial institutions are catching up to this tech as a means of securing and sharing information.

Right now, it is being treated like an asset, like a stock, bond or a house. Something you ‘hold’ and hope gains in value. It is exciting! For broke creatives, it is not too late to invest as no one really knows the true potential of where it is going. Projections have remarked that the price of a coin may reach $50,000 by 2021. A lot of work since 2016 has been in legitimizing this new paradigm. 

In the buying and selling there has been a lot of controversy. What are you buying and selling? Bitcoin is assigned to an address called a KEY. Apps like Coinbase, Gemini, Binance, or hard case keys, will create a private key for you as your address. A string of 17 numbers and letters. If you are purchasing into the 1000s a key is a must for the ownership. If the web goes out it has stopped people from cashing out. 

In total the amount of bitcoin produced by miners 18.5 million mined right now. With 20% lost to various happenings like people losing their keys creating obsolete bitcoins. We are potentially close to cap mining, creating scarcity which drives up the cost. There are risks, the future is unwritten. There could be changes in FCC rules, but the reward is to least have some skin in the future that we all wish to see and believing that future is worth the effort of learning how to buy bitcoin.  

How to buy Bitcoin

I don’t have 30k how can I buy bitcoin? You can buy fractions, which is cool. The 3 options I would like to discuss are assuming you aren’t day trading bitcoin and are on a more casual path involving buying and holding.

Robinhood is a free app and has no commission, but you actually don’t own it because you don’t get a private key, the 17 number and letters. You can’t send bitcoin, essentially can’t use it, it is only an investment portfolio set up. Which is fine if you treat it like an asset. It’s really easy and has a great graphic design, so you kind of feel like futuristic dystopic bitcoin seller hacker chick, which makes it fun. Money should be fun. Easy and sexy looking, you can sell it for dollars.

The second way to buy bitcoin which just launched is through PayPal you can buy sell and hold on PayPal. They have a fee structure based on the percentage of how much you buy. If you buy $101 it is a penny less than if you but $100 of bitcoin. The risk as with Robinhood is what if you get hacked since PayPal would be an excellent target but, but PayPal is also really secure, more so than Robinhood. You cannot send any of your coins to the Key. If you are actually going to invest some real money, this wouldn’t be the recommended way. By real money I mean $1000 or more.

If you just want to buy bitcoin to hold it within the $1000 range, I will just go with Robinhood, it’s just so easy, sexy, and cool. PayPal is corny, PayPal is Peter Thiel, PayPal is trying to be the cool kid, but they are not, but its PayPal, they are integrated with everything. They don’t allow you to buy items with it yet. But I think they are probably just working out some FCC stuff.

Lastly the most popular way to buy bitcoin is using Coinbase App. They are really cool they used to be janky in 2016. It’s great for learning about other coins. Finding out what is next. It’s cheapest if you use you ACH transfer, similar to the accounting and routing number. You get a private key and are able to buy, sell and convert coin to other coins. They also have a lot of educational information on their app and are the OG’s of online trading. The downside is logging in with their two-step authentication system can be confusing and many people panic getting locked out. Their support system is NOT helpful so try to write every password and system down before hand.

John Carroll Kirby x Scent

What’s there not to like about John Carroll Kirby!? The multi instrumentalist, producer and purveyor of socal funk has long been the secret weapon for the likes of Norah Jones, Blood Orange, Bat for Lashes, Frank OceanConnan MockasinKali Uchis, and Harry Styles, adding a touch of what some consider “Kirbyesque” nuances. In the past year he presented his own vision of jazz tinged piano compositions, restrained in its minimalism and collaborative in its vision on the masterful album My Garden.

Though the precursor, the haunting and meditative album Conflict, is what we are focusing on. Released in the earlier days of the pandemic this body of work presented a perfect soundscape to the morose sentiment of the beginning of lockdown. His version offered insight and self reflection in a way which lent to thoughts of wabi-sabi fundamentalism and the perfections of slow moving meditations.

With all this time spent to reflect, in came the decision to upend the conventions of merch. Taking on a collaborative project Kirby linked with close friend Josefina Valdés of the Mexico City based indie label Scent to create a collection of hand sourced stones that were polished and engraved with the albums track titles. The brand is part of a new wave of Mexico City based designers making unique and unconventional garments, Scent is highly sought after for their second layer body piece. In a way extending the song taken close to heart. We spoke with John Carroll Kirby and Scent’s Josefina Valdés on this union of creative spirits.

John Carroll Kirby 

How did you guys meet it is such a wonderfully collaborative collection to mix the stones and track titles that are both so grounding.

John Carroll Kirby -Josefina and I met when i was on tour in Mexico City with Connan Mockasin, and stayed in touch since then!!! I was a fan of Josephina’s brand Scent, especially her second skin line as worn by Rihanna and Lil Miquela. I contributed music for her Scent Boveda 2020 show, and from there we decided to collaborate on some merch!

With this collaboration how did you go about deciding to use specifically the album Conflict? It was such a great piece of work to soundtrack the beginning of quarantine.

Josefina Valdés – I related with the Conflict album a lot because there is something so nostalgic about it, specially because this year has been extremely weird in so many ways and not precisely about happiness and  for me this album has a lot of melancholy to it and goes incredibly well with the times we are living.

What was it like in translating the albums song titles into the wearable art? 

Josefina Valdés – I listened to the songs and I envisioned a color palette, I felt this album contained a lot of brownish-goldish-orangey  hues, not too much contrast just harmony between each color, then I started looking for the stones that contained this color palette.

How did you go about picking the specific stones that would be used for this selection?

Josefina Valdés – Stones were picked according to their colors and size, we needed something that gave us the space to carve on the songs, agate turned out to be the best material for what we wanted to express in color texture and shape. Agates worked so well because they contained the exact color palette I had in mind when listening to the album. 

Was there a specific significance to the song titles that you chose, it felt like the symbolism is concentrated in the song. 

Josefina Valdés – I’m obsessed with the whole album but these specific titles where so powerful against the agates, we used our favorite words to make them necklaces you could wear close to your heart. 

Do you see the collaboration extending into other works John has created or other items customized in the Scent brand?

Josefina Valdés – I think it was a combination of both, but I had John’s aesthetic very present in the whole process, for me it easier to work with someone that has a very solid sense of identity as I see in everything John does, that gave me a strong base to start with and conjugate with Scent aesthetic as well, the result was very Scent and very John Carroll Kirby at the same time, we both related so well with the result.

With the recent Roberta Gentry show We Need Mirrors at LADIES’ ROOM we were able to see her perfectionist vision of shape, dimension, color, and light. Her intricate pieces greatly inspired by the works of Stanisław Lem’s Solaris, a book which followed a crew of scientists on a research station on their mission to understand an extraterrestrial intelligence. Her paintings merge the primordial with futurism into an overall existential presentation of what life could be and is. The symmetry and paint practices are greatly informed by Agnes Martin, exploring order and humanity. Geometry reigns supreme in her world of deco and pomo angles which as us all. We got to know the artist’s chatting up on the process of discipline, Arizona’s landscape, and finding comfort in David Lynch’s weather reports.

What’s your daily routine? 

Depends on the day! On studio days I start working in the morning around 9 or 10 and typically finish around 7pm. I set a goal for each day that I’m in the studio so that I don’t just fumble around or waste time not knowing what to do. 

 

When did you realize you wanted to be a painter?

Probably when I was in high school. I found a lot of relief from teenage angst in painting, it was the way that I could best express things I didn’t have language for. 

 

Which artist do you think is most misunderstood? 

I’m not sure if any artist can be misunderstood, since the experience of art is subjective, and the artist really has no control over how their work is understood by others. That being said, I think had some form of misunderstanding for Agnes Martin for a long time. In grad school I decided I didn’t like her work because of the way she writes about it, which is ridiculous looking back. I loved the experience of looking at it but reading her writing about her work was such a different thing. She’s one of my favorite painters now, but it’s always made me slightly wary of using too much language to describe painting.

Have you always been drawn to these hard-edge geometric patterns, or is this a more recent direction? 

The hard-edged work started in grad school, along with a fascination with symbols, crystallography, furniture meant for displaying collections, and cutaway diagrams. Previous work was about landscape and the layering of the earth and was definitely not hard-edge. I enjoy organizing chaos, and clean lines allow me to make distinct separations across the canvas.

 

Arizona and its picturesque deserts have often been sanctuaries for artists. How did that space influence your practice, if at all?

I think that the landscape I grew up in, which was high desert miles from the nearest paved road, definitely influenced the person I am. A fascination with the order and efficiency of nature, along with its infinite complexity, is something that has stayed with me. And I think learning how to be okay with isolation is pretty useful as an artist.

Before you begin a canvas, are your kaleidoscopic shapes, shades and colors preordained, or do you improvise your compositions?

Yes! I plan it all out in a series of small drawings before I start. I begin with the central structure, and then create an environment for it to live in. Then I decide where the lights and darks are, and finally the general color scheme. There are always surprises no matter how well you plan, however, and it’s still exciting to see what they end up looking like in the flesh. 

How might the end of 2020 and birth of 2021 inform your work going forward?

I don’t think anyone has totally escaped the changes that this year has brought. I’ve been watching David Lynch’s weather reports, they’re really comforting. He says this a period of transformation and I find that really hopeful. I plan on continuing to allow the work to evolve and grow, making small improvements and experiments and learning from them. Everything has to move at its own pace, and I hope after this year we can collectively claim a bit more patience at least.

Hey guys welcome to Gitte’s Kitchen. I’m doing a special edition, Magic Medicinal Mushrooms Raw Chocolate dish for you. I have my very special mushrooms in the coffee grinder. We are going to use amazing ceremonial grade cacao. They are doing ceremonies all around the world with cacao now because it opens your heart, it’s amazing for iron zinc magnesium. Specially if you are vegan it immediately replenishes your brain. Coconut butter obviously the finest quality raw vegan, local honey (agave for vegan), amazing for allergies and other problems. Some cayenne one of the most amazing stimulants in the plant world. Turmeric it’s anti-inflammatory. Ginger so you can digest this in a very beautiful peaceful way.

Start by taking out some ceremonial grade superfood cacao. Use 3 huge tablespoon fulls. Then we are going to take our coconut butter. Use as much as the cacao, maybe a little bit more. Then we are going to take our bowl to the dehydrator.  Make sure it’s not above 118 degrees so it doesn’t kill any of the nutrients in the chocolate. Well let it sit in there for an hour and it will be melted and then we can add the other ingredients.

We are going to shred our turmeric and ginger together. When you are finish mixing the ginger and turmeric together, use the coffee grinder and make the mushroom powder. Mix the powder into the turmeric and ginger. I’m going to want to add some cayenne pepper for flavor. You can also add some sea salt to make it extra delicious. Make sure you mix it well.

Put all the ingredients in the bowl and blend it up smooth. Add some honey as a sweetener but a little goes a long way. After mixing the ingredients go ahead and fill a tray with the chocolate, push the chocolate down so it becomes smooth.

Now we filled up our chocolate in the tray, place it in the fridge for a couple of hours and it will be ready to be enjoyed.

Super cute. I put a few in a jar for some special friends.
