Old School Wednesday: Beastie Boys – Sabotage

Old School Wednesday: Beastie Boys – Sabotage

“I can’t stand it, I know you planned it

I’m-a set it straight, this Watergate

But I can’t stand rockin’ when I’m in this place

Because I feel disgrace because you’re all in my face

But make no mistakes and switch up my channel

I’m Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle

What could it be — it’s a mirage

You’re scheming on a thing, that’s sabotage”

This song is one of the best things to come out of 1994! “Sabotage” was in heavy rotation on radio, Mtv, and on almost every mixtape (yes they actually existed) I had at the time. So much to love starting with MCA’s distorted bass riff intro, to Ad-Rock’s lyrics and delivery, to the badass 70’s crime drama inspired video directed by Spike Jonze that was robbed of an MTV VMA

I always speculated what the song was about, but it wasn’t until the Beastie Boys Autobiography (great read) was released in 2018 that they actually explained what the lyrics to “Sabotage” are about. The track was going to be an instrumental because they couldn’t come up with the right lyrics. Then Ad-Rock basically wrote the lyrics as a diss track aimed at Mario Caldatto Jr., their long time audio engineer, because he kept pushing them to finish a track. Thank you Mario C.

Old School Wednesday: SWV ~ Right Here

Old School Wednesday: SWV ~ Right Here

It was a tough decision which version of “Right Here” to go with, but ended up with the Remix.

SWV’s original version from 1992 has a little more bounce, and Taj rapping the bridge is textbook early 1990’s hip-hop, but the Michael Jackson “Human Nature” sample in the remix is sooo good. Plus, the remix was also a bigger hit, and it has Pharrell rapping “S the double the U the V”. Also, how often is a song soundtracked in a kids movie (Free Willy) and sampled in a Chris Brown Track?

Michael Jackson track produced by Quincy Jones, and performed by Toto. So random and amazing.

Old School Wednesday: Jay Z – Dirt of Your Shoulder

Old School Wednesday: Jay Z – Dirt of Your Shoulder

“Said the ladies, they love me, from the bleachers they screamin’
All the ballers is bouncin’, they like the way I be leanin’
All the rappers be hatin’ off the track that I’m makin’
But all the hustlers, they love it, just to see one of us make it
Came from the bottom of the bottom, to the top of the pops
N____, London, Japan and I’m straight off the block
Like a running back, get it? Man, I’m straight off the block
I can run it back, n____, ‘cause I’m straight with the Roc”

Jay-Z at the top of his game. Sometimes you just have to bump some bass and beats, and back in the ’00s Timbaland was unstoppable. 16 years later and this track is still ridiculous. I love watching the video of Jay-Z’s expression the first time Timbaland played him this beat.

Old School Wednesday: Tony! Toni! Toné! – Feels Good

“Mocedes the Mellow, quite a nice fellow

Met 3T, hit a rhyme, acapello

They had the rhythm and I had the rhyme

So then a hit of that one more time

It worked out and then they worked it in

Tony! Toni! Toné! has done it again”

Mocedes’ TTT rhyme has been in my head lately. I always just thought of 3T as the group that made some great songs and launched tghe career of Raphael Saadiq, but I didn’t realize that 3T was a family band (2 brothers and a cousin).

James Brown ~ “Funky President” (L)

Another classic Drum break from a 1974 James Brown track.

Lyn Collins ~ “Think (About It)

1972 Classic with Lyn Collins backed by the JBs on a James Brown produced track. The Woo!Yeah! Break is probably most remembered being sampled here.

Old School Wednesday: Notorious B.I.G. – Going Back to Cali

Old School Wednesday: Notorious B.I.G. – Going Back to Cali

“If I got to choose a coast, I got to choose the East

I live out there, so don’t go there

But that don’t mean a _____ can’t rest in the West

See some nice breast in the West

Smoke some nice sess in the West, y’all ______ is a mess

Thinking I’m gon stop, giving L.A props

All I got is beef with those that violate me

I shall annihilate thee”

As a kid from the DMV, this track always resonated with me. I always wanted to take trips to the left coast until as an immature adult, I just decided to move there. Ever since, whenever I’m travelling, I hear “I’m going going, back back, to cali cali…” playing in my head when I am on my way home. Every. Every. Time. Time.

It’s a shame Notorious B.I.G.’s love letter to the West Coast was released posthumously. Maybe, if it was released before the 1997 Soul Train Awards it might have diffused the East Coast/West Coast feud before he was murdered. There needed to be more tracks with Biggie rapping over West-coast style beats. Actually, there just needed to be more tracks of Biggie rapping. Ugh. What could have been.

And if ya don’t know, now ya know.” FYI – The Notorious B.I.G. Box Set goes on sale Saturday as part of this month’s RSD release. I will definitely be trying to snag a set for myself!
